As he had hoped early in the season, Phoenix Brophy junior John Wojciechowski broke the state record he had been breaking throughout the season in the 100 butterfly in leading the Broncos to yet another state title. at Arizona State’s Mona Plummer Aquatics Center.

But Phoenix Desert Vista sent a message with second-place finishes in both the boys and girls’ meets.

Phoenix Xavier won its 10th straight 5A-I girls title, and has won 20 of the last 21, while Brophy took its 21st in a row and 29th of the last 30.

“The kids swam great,” Desert Vista coach Shawn O’Connell said. “Just a fun, young group to coach. I’m speechless.”

Meanwhile, Wojciechowski, who had lowered the state standard of 49.37 at the first invitational of the season and lowered it later in the year, did it again in preliminaries on Friday at 48.33. The Scottsdale resident had said he ultimately wanted to break the 48-second mark.

“I’m really relieved, I can breathe now,” he said after clocking 47.87 on Saturday in winning his second individual state title. “I felt some pressure this week but once I wake up, I’m not nervous, I’m just excited to swim.”

He wasn’t the only one.

Teammate Alex Lendrum tied one state record, the 200 individual medley (1:49.41) and then lowered the 500 freestyle (4:27.67) record later in the day. He and Wojociechowski also were part of two victorious relays.

Among the surprises — Alex Ford of Mesa Red Mountain, who finished second behind Brophy’s Brian Stevens in the 200 freestyle and Wojciechowski in the 100 butterfly. He had entered the day with only the fourth-fastest 200 time and the sixth-fastest in the fly.

Chandler Hamilton’s Carl Mickelson rebounded from a fifth place in the butterfly with his third straight state title in the 100 breaststroke. He broke the 18-year-old state record in the event in preliminaries on Friday at 56.35.

Tempe Corona del Sol’s Bryan Liu won the 100 backstroke in an all-American time of 51.71. Brophy won nine of 12 events in the meet.

5A-I GIRLS

In the girls’ meet, Christine Olson of Gilbert Mesquite won the 200 individual medley in an automatic all-American time of 2:03.06, winning her seventh individual state title in her prep career.

But in the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Katie Olsen of Desert Vista got ahead of her and won by .80 of a second, breaking Olson’s 5A record set last year.

“I have no excuses,” Olson said between tears. “I thought I was going to swim better.”

The Thunder swimmer was nearly speechless.

“I don’t know, definitely surprising,” Olsen said. “I don’t know where I pulled that out of.”

There were more upsets. Mesa Dobson’s Traycie Swartz got beat by Phoenix Xavier’s Haley Krakoski (49.64) in the 100 freestyle by .05 of a second.

“I’ve been training really hard and it was just time for me to go faster, get down there and break 50,” Krakoski said of the swim that was just off Swartz’ state record of a year ago.

“I feel like I did the best I could,” Swartz said. “Haley is a great competitor. I’ve raced her since we were really little. We’ve been on and off, and I’m happy for her.”

The two girls were switched in the same race a year ago. Swartz bounced back with a win in the 100 backstroke.

And Scottsdale Desert Mountain’s Ally Loper outdueled Mesa Mountain View’s Emily Christensen in both the 200 and 500 freestyle, events in which the Toro junior had switched after being in the sprints her first two years.

“I was really excited to be able to race her because she is such a good racer.” Loper said. “I’m just happy I was first in both races. I felt really good in warm-ups so I felt pretty confident.”

The Desert Vista girls started the day right with Taylor Newgaard, Olsen, Lorren Torres and Tinsley Andrews winning the 200 medley relay in an automatic all-American time of 1:48.68.

Mountain View’s Mikenna Cloward successfully defended her diving title with a score of 441.55.
