Valley Christian boys, girls take 4th in 1A/2A cross country
By Anthony Martinez, For the Tribune
Sean Newport may have been disappointed with the way his high school cross country career ended, but his fifth-place finish helped Chandler Valley Christian take fourth in the 1A/2A state meet at Cave Creek Golf Course on Saturday.
“I thought I was going to win it,” Newport said. “I was very disappointed. I think I could’ve stayed with the pack sooner; I let them get away from me a little bit. I tried to make it up, but then I just died.”
Newport said the course itself also proved to be a challenge.
“It’s all on grass so it’s really slow,” Newport said. “The heat wasn’t that bad, but it was still there and a couple of the hills, they weren’t too big but they take a lot out of you.”
Newport finished the 3.1-mile course in a time of 17:16. Cody Rosengarten from Tombstone finished with a time of 16:34.70 to take first.
Kearns Canyon Hopi runners took second, third, fifth, sixth and 10th place to give the Bruins the team state title.
3A Boys
Tuba City’s Ryan Yazzie finished with a time of 16:13.20 to win the individual 3A championship. Yazzie had two teammates finish in the top 10 with him to give Tuba City the team title.
1A/2A Girls
Although its best individual finish came in at 19th overall, the Chandler Valley Christian girls cross country team was still able to finish in the top five at the 1A/2A state meet.
Amanda Patterson had the best time for Valley Christian, finishing the 3.1-mile course with a time of 22:46.25. The Trojans finished with a score of 152 to take home fourth place.
Runners from Flagstaff Northland Prep and Keams Canyon Hopi dominated the top 10. Andrea Klimowski finished with a time of 20:20.45, 30.8 seconds ahead of fellow Northland Prep runner Corrie Bain, to win the individual crown. Hopi had four runners finish in the top 10 to secure the team championship, 19 points ahead of Northland Prep.
3A Girls
Rolanda Jumbo of Chinle won the 3A girls race with a time of 18:14.30. Chinle had two other top-10 finishers and cruised to the team title.
