Basha eliminates Mountain View in 5A tourney

Kehau Baker had 25 kills and Liz Servestro added 50 assists as 12th-seeded Chandler Basha (22-16) upset No. 5 Mesa Mountain View, 25-22, 16-25, 25-20, 25-14, in the first round of the 5A Division I state girls volleyball tournament Wednesday at Mountain View.
Basha coach Jim Kann called it the biggest win in the young program’s history.
“First time we have ever gotten to the second round,” Kann said. “My kids played real well tonight.”
Callyn Weyenberg added 14 kills for the Bears while Kayla Peralta had 24 digs.
Madi Fitzgerald had 21 kills to lead Mountain View (14-4).
“Basha’s a good team and they played really well,” Mountain View coach Katie Higgins said. “They’re in a region with Desert Vista, Basha and Mountain Pointe so for the last month they’ve been playing a lot of great volleyball teams and when that’s your prep for this match that probably helps.”

CORONA DEL SOL DEF. TUCSON, 25-11, 25-10, 25-12: Bethany Jorgensen had nine kills, Cassie Ronda had eight, and Emily Kaup had seven as the host Aztecs (16-2) dispatched the Badgers.
Taylor Kesteloot had 20 assists for Corona and Cassie Fish had three aces.
DESERT MOUNTAIN DEF. HAMILTON, 25-23, 25-19, 19-25, 26-24: The Wolves ended the Huskies’ (11-7) season.
XAVIER DEF. RED MOUNTAIN, 25-11, 25-18, 25-17: As a team, the host Gators (33-3) had eight aces and 11 blocks to easily dispatch the Mountain Lions.
GILBERT DEF. MESA, 25-10, 25-21, 25-15: Sarah Clause had 17 kills and Alyssa Dwyer added 12 kills as the host Tigers (32-11) swept past Mesa.
Katie DeWitt led off the game with four straight aces for Mesa. Lexi Brown led the Jackrabbits with eight kills.
MESQUITE DEF. GLENDALE MOUNTAIN RIDGE, 25-23, 25-16, 18-25, 26-24: Makenzie Smith had 25 kills, Emily Blahak added seven, and Christine Sarager had six as the No. 10 Wildcats upset the No. 7 Mountain Lions in Glendale.
Jordan Gonzalez had 15 digs for Mesquite and Brookelyn Campbell added 38 assists.
DESERT VISTA DEF. PHOENIX NORTH CANYON, 25-12, 25-15, 25-13: Using a strong service game, the Thunder (38-6) made quick work of the Rattlers. The second-seeded Thunder had 12 aces, including five in the final game.
“We’re serving tough,” coach Molly West said. “Our key right now is to reduce those unforced errors.”
Erika White had 20 digs for Desert Vista. Betsi Metter had 11 kills, Kyle Hartman added seven, and McKella Williams had six.
5A-II
HORIZON DEF. TUCSON RINCON, 25-13, 25-23, 25-13: Kaitlin Halverstadt led the host Huskies (24-17) past Rincon (23-19). Halverstadt had 11 kills and seven digs. Renee Roth added 10 kills and two aces, and Sarah McGaffin finished with six kills, 10 assists and seven digs.
PEORIA SUNRISE MOUNTAIN DEF. PINNACLE, 25-19, 25-12, 25-20: The Pioneers’ season ended in straight sets in Peoria.
DESERT RIDGE DEF. ANTHEM BOULDER CREEK, 25-17 14-25, 25-13, 25-16: Calie Schuldt had 11 kills and five aces for the Jaguars (15-3). Jenee Lopez added 23 digs and Luisa Niu had nine kills and two blocks.
In other first-round action: Peoria Centennial def. Yuma Cibola, 25-9, 25-12, 25-18; Surprise Willow Canyon def. Glendale Ironwood, 25-13, 25-21, 25-17; Glendale Deer Valley def. Phoenix North, 25-15, 25-14, 25-13; Marana Mountain View def. Yuma, 25-22, 25-15, 25-14; and Tucson Ironwood Ridge def. Kingman, 25-8, 25-17, 25-14.
