Mesa Mountain View quarterback Blake Decker is quietly proving himself among the elite quarterbacks in the state.

SLIDESHOW: Friday night football action

The senior played another efficient game in guiding the top-seeded Toros to a 43-6 victory over Tucson High on Friday night in a first-round 5A-I playoff game at Mountain View.

Decker, who missed nearly three full games this season, finished the night with 254 passing yards and three touchdowns while completing 13 of 17 passes.

“Blake has a great arm and he can really throw the ball well, especially when he has a little time,” said Toros coach Tom Joseph. “Tucson has some good athletes on their team, and they made some nice plays in the first half, but (Decker) made some big throws.”

Mountain View (11-0) will host eighth-seeded Tempe Corona del Sol (9-2) next Friday in a quarterfinal showdown. Joseph was already aware of Corona’s 56-27 victory over Phoenix César Chavez at game’s end. The Aztecs were ranked No. 1 much of the season.

“We’re getting healthier, but we’re going to have to play a lot better next week, I can tell you that,” Joseph said.

Senior Nate Birtcher caught two touchdowns passes and Jordan Thompson caught one, while junior tailback Jacom Brimhall led the ground attack with 127 yards and two touchdowns.

Tucson’s offense kept the game respectable for much of the first half with two long drives and big plays from quarterback Peter Borquez. But Mountain View’s defense clamped down each time the Badgers threatened to score a touchdown. The Toros recovered two fumbles and got interceptions from Casey Mack and Dallin Funk.
