Competition gets tougher for Mtn. View

By Les Willsey, Tribune

Top-seeded Mesa Mountain View hasn’t faced a formidable foe since mid-October and faced only a couple all season. That drought of championship-caliber foes is done beginning tonight as the Toros host No. 8 seed Tempe Corona del Sol in a 5A Division I state quarterfinal battle at Toro Stadium.

Mountain View (11-0) has played only two tight games in fashioning the only unblemished record in 5A-I. The Toros edged defending state champion Phoenix Brophy 22-17 in late September and toppled Chandler Basha 23-21 on Oct. 17.

Despite mostly easy and blowout triumphs, Toros coach Tom Joseph has applauded his team’s ability to play consistently well, week in and week out.

“It’s hard to stay focused every game and be able to play the way we have most of the year,” Joseph said. “They’ve done it so far. But our kids know there are no easy ones left.”

Mountain View’s 11-0 record boasts impressive numbers — an effective offense both running and passing and a stingy, turnover-producing defense. Mountain View has outscored its opponents 451-98 while its turnover ratio of plus-30 (37 takeaways vs. seven giveaways) is astounding.

Those sets of numbers tell an 11-0 story. The Toros and Aztecs haven’t met since 2002 when Joseph began his tenure at Mountain View. Joseph and Corona coach Gary Venturo matched up several times when Joseph coached at Tempe Marcos de Niza and the teams resided in the Central Region.

“They don’t make many mistakes,” Venturo said. “You have to try and make them make some (turnovers). If you don’t, it’s hard to beat them.

“The key for us is to out-hit them. I think the teams are about even, but we have to out-hit them.”

Corona (9-2) has lost two of the last three games but righted the ship with a 57-point outburst against Laveen César Chavez last week in the first round. Venturo thinks the solid teams the Aztecs saw the final couple of weeks before Chavez have them ready for this one.

“We know what they like to do, and they know what we like to do,” Venturo said. “We’ve been tested lately. It’s in the kids’ hands.”

Joseph is impressed with Corona’s defense and its offense, led by junior running back Michael Lange. Lange has rushed for 1,399 yards and been limited to less than 100 yards just twice. Mountain View has been roughed up on the ground by Phoenix Brophy’s Max Leonesio and Basha’s Will Still. Both rushed for 150 yards or better vs. the Toros.

“They can be explosive on offense,” Joseph said. “The key for us is having a great defensive game.”

Game of the week: No. 8 Corona del Sol (9-2) at No. 1 Mountain View (11-0)

Time: 7 p.m.
