Prep highlights: Gilbert boys go 2OTs to defeat Corona

It took Gilbert two overtimes to finally put away Tempe Corona del Sol as the Tigers defeated the host Aztecs, 66-61, in a 5A nonregion boys basketball game Friday night.
The Tigers’ Elliott Clark scored 25 points, including a four-point play in the second overtime to put the game out of reach of the Aztecs. Shawn King added 21 points for the Tigers.
Kyle Noon led the Aztecs in scoring with 17 points. Teammate Andrew Fox scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds.
BOYS BASKETBALL
After being down 30-11 and shooting only 12 percent from the field in the first half, Valley Christian outscored visiting Payson 53-25 in the second half to win 64-55. The Trojans’ 19-point comeback was the largest in the school’s history.
John Bailey scored 24 points and Jarrett Green hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to give Dobson (3-3) a 79-78 victory over visiting Mesquite.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Led by Kira Hoover’s 17 points, Chaparral overcame Glendale Sandra Day O’Connor’s late lead to win 58-55. Hoover also added nine rebounds and eight steals.
Chandler used pressure defense to crush visiting Sierra Vista Buena 87-34. Five Wolves (3-0) scored in double figures, led by MacKenzie Flannigan, who had 18 points, four rebounds and three steals. Steffanie Jordan had 17 points and 13 steals.
Ramona Dixon scored 16 points to lead all scorers, but Tempe dropped another heartbreaker, 44-43, to visiting Flagstaff Coconino. The Buffaloes fell to 0-8, but they have lost four games by a combined five points, including three games by a point. Jade Wilson added 15 points for Tempe.
BOYS SOCCER
Rene Cardona scored his third goal in the first three games of the season as Mesa beat Tucson 3-0. Robert Solomonson and Miguel Gutierrez each scored goals for the Jackrabbits (2-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Ashley Fredrickson scored a goal in the second overtime, the 106th minute, to break a 1-1 tie and lift Skyline to a 2-1 victory over visiting Surprise Willow Canyon.
With the win, Skyline coach Domenico Scafaria earned the 250th win of his career as a head coach in Arizona.
Scafaria spent 26 years coaching at Mesa Mountain View, accumulating 242 wins, before joining the Coyotes last year.
