Mesa boys advance at Tempe soccer tourney

BOYS SOCCER
Mesa advanced out of pool play in the Tempe Diablos Classic at Tempe Sports Complex with a 2-1 victory over Chandler. Both goals for the Jackrabbits (4-2) were scored off a flip throw-in by Tyler Ryan. The first goal was scored by Rubin Gonzalez. The second was scored by Ryan, when the ball hit the goal post after the throw-in and scored.
GIRLS SOCCER
Highland advanced to the winners’ bracket semifinals with a 5-0 win over Basha in pool play of the Tempe Diablos Classic at Tempe Sports Complex. Gretchen Kulick, Amy Jarvis, Molley Cellar, Sam Bush, and Chelsea Riedell all scored a goal for the Hawks (3-0-2) who will play Hamilton at 6 p.m. Thursday at Tempe Sports Complex.
Red Mountain and Marcos de Niza played to a 2-2 draw in pool play at the Tempe Diablos tournament at Tempe Sports Complex. Bianca Doller and Sarah Pawlowski each scored a goal for Marcos, and Kelli Aros, Amanda Wolfe had a goal apiece for the Mountain Lions (3-0-2).
Nicole Reese scored twice as Gilbert (5-0) beat Paradise Valley 3-1 to advance to the semifinals of the Tempe Diablos Classic.
Mountain View advanced to the winners bracet semifinals of the Tempe Diablos Classic with a 3-2 win in pool play over Chandler. Jennifer Larson, Cristal Beebe, and Shelby Nielson scored a goal each for the Toros (3-1-1). Mountain View will play Gilbert at 6 p.m. Thursday at Tempe Sports Complex. M.O.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Sean Orlando scored 15 points to help Notre Dame top host Seton Catholic 51-40 in a 4A nonregion matchup. Nate Dudley added 12 points for the Saint. Andrew Blauvelt scored a game-high 21 for Seton.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Led by Gabby Washington’s 21 points and six steals, Desert Ridge cruised past visiting Yuma Gila Ridge 85-21. Nykol Dillon (15 points), Kaitlyn Snyder (12) and Allison Reese (10) also scored in double figures for the Jaguars.
