Zenuk’s kicks right on target

By Kyle Odegard, Tribune

When the action stops, Gilbert Highland’s attack starts.

The Hawks threatened to score all afternoon on free kicks following a whistle, breaking through once for a 1-0 win Saturday over Phoenix Mountain Pointe in the girls soccer championship of the Mustang Classic at Dobson High School in Mesa.

Gretchen Kulick knocked in a header on a corner kick from Hilary Zenuk for the lone score. Zenuk’s on-point passes put Highland in position to score several times throughout the match.

The Hawks also won both their games on Friday using free or corner kicks.

“She’s always perfect,” said Highland coach John Berzins of Zenuk’s free kicking. “Putting it right on the money, right where we need it. We’re lucky to have a player like her.”

Zenuk said she has been designated as the free kicker on every team she’s been on.

“It kind of comes easy to me,” Zenuk said. “It’s an amazing feeling when people put it in the net because we work hard on them in practice.”

Berzins is well aware of the advantage Zenuk brings his squad.

“It’s night and day for teams,” Berzins said. “We wouldn’t be able to do a lot of the stuff we do without her.”

Highland’s goal came in the 27th minute of the first half, following multiple scoring chances leading up to it. The Pride didn’t threaten much offensively. Their last good chance came on a corner kick with 11 minutes remaining, but three shots inside the penalty box couldn’t break through a sea of Highland defenders.

The Hawks went undefeated in six games to take home the tournament title, following a championship in the Fiesta Bowl Tournament earlier in the season.

“Only halfway through the year we’ve achieved a lot,” Berzins said. “Hopefully, we can keep this streak going.”

The win avenged a loss to Mountain Pointe this season for Highland. Gilbert finished in third place in the tournament by beating Tempe Corona del Sol 3-0 in the consolation game.
