Prep report: Corona boys slip past Brophy

Marcel Towns scored four of his seven points in overtime to lead the Tempe Corona del Sol boys basketball squad to a 58-57 victory over visiting Phoenix Brophy Thursday night. David Whitmore led the Aztecs (8-7) with 17 points and 13 rebounds, but Towns came up clutch when it mattered most. Corona had a chance to win the game in regulation, but the Aztecs missed a shot at the buzzer before holding on to a three-point lead that Brophy cut to one at the end of the game. The Broncos' (8-5) Ryan Milne led all scorers with 18 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Blondy Baruti scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as Mesa topped Camelback 76-59 at Mesa High School. The Jackrabbits' (10-5) Donte Medder added 15 points and nine assists.

BOYS SOCCER

Yuri Ribiero scored two goals to lead McClintock to a 3-1 win over Saguaro in a 4A-I Desert Sky region matchup. Ribiero opened the scoring with a goal in the first half, but Joe Caton evened the score before halftime for the Sabercats (3-10, 0-1). Ribiero netted the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute of the second half and Xavier Carillo iced the game with the third goal for the Chargers (7-1, 1-0).

GIRLS SOCCER

Desert Mountain got at least one goal from 10 different players, three of whom scored two, in a 14-0 drubbing of host St. Mary's. Paige Denke, Jordyn Greenberg and Kelly Kunkel each hit scored twice for the Wolves (3-3).

IVE BEEN WATCHING MARCEL TOWNS FOR A WHILE I GUESS HE HAS NOT PLAYED BECAUSE HE WAS INJURED IN THE BEGINING OF THE SEASON BUT HE SHURE CAN PLAY HES A SMART PLAYER AND HAS POTENTIAL TO BE VERY GOOD !! HE COMES FROM A GOOD ATHLETIC BASKETBALL FAMILY HE IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE TOP PLAYERS TO WATCH Suggest removal of this comment
