Milus blazes to record 100, but will it count?
By Kyle Odegard, Tribune
From the start of Ryan Milus’ blazing 100-meter run, onlookers knew they were watching something special.
But inside their minds was the only place it was officially recorded.
Multiple stopwatches had the Chandler Hamilton sprinter breaking Arizona’s 100-meter dash record on Friday night at the Tribune Invitational at Mesa Westwood, but the electronic timer malfunctioned, meaning there is no official time and no record.
Phoenix Dysart’s Cricket Williams holds the state record with a time of 10.33 seconds in 1978.
“The camera system worked, but something in the software didn’t work to where the times in that race didn’t register,” meet director Thad Gates said. “It’s really unfortunate.”
The handheld stopwatch following Milus had him finishing in 10.1 seconds, and various others in the crowd — including coach Norris Thomas — had him right around that mark. As a rule of thumb, 0.24 seconds is added on from a handheld time to make it electronic, which would have given him a time of 10.34 seconds.
That number alone would have tied the 5A record, although coaches on hand were sure he broke it.
It was the only time in the Invitational in which the electronic timer did not work. Instead of listing each runner’s mark, the time of day came up instead.
“It’s too bad that it happened because he ran a great race,” Gates said.
Despite the glitch, Milus might still get his record. Since the camera system did film the entire race, his time may have been recorded.
It couldn’t be checked on site, but Gates said he would check with the camera company to see if they could make a determination. Results should be back in the next few days.
Milus will have a few more cracks at the record this year, but a fast track and a slight tailwind behind him made the conditions optimal.
The Invitational is used as a tuneup, and the Chandler girls showed they are ready for state by scoring 135 points to claim the title. Phoenix Desert Vista finished in second with 115.83 points, followed by Mesa Mountain View with 86.6 points.
Phoenix Desert Vista won the boys side with 108 points, Mesa Mountain View finished second with 93 points and Chandler came in third with 71 points.
Chandler’s Larissa Matthews won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and anchored one relay team to victory.
She only had a few minutes to rest up in between finishing the 4x100-meter relay and beginning the 300-meter hurdles.
“You want to try and conserve (energy) but you really can’t,” Matthews said.
Chandler’s Yusuf Muhammad won the 300-meter hurdles after finishing last in the event at the Chandler Rotary Invitational after hitting the first hurdle and falling to the ground.
The points he gains in that event could give Chandler a shot at challenging Desert Vista for the state title.

I hope they will find a way to figure this out...every kid in that heat should have qualified for the state meet, and i hope a computer error will not keep them from competing if this was their first qualifying time. Suggest removal of this commentApril 25, 2009
