Now that's revenge. A Chandler Seton Catholic softball season which began with sophomore ace Olivia Bergman's face being broken by a batted ball during tryouts ended Friday night with screams of joy, as the Sentinels won their first 4A Division II state championship, a 9-0 rout over Phoenix Greenway at Rose Mofford softball complex.

SLIDESHOW: Seton wins 4A-II softball championship

Seton's 2008 season was ended prematurely by Greenway.

It was last year which turned into motivation which stuck with the Sentinels as they ran 1 to 2 miles three to four times per week for conditioning; why Bergman "came back stronger," from having her nose and cheekbones broken in February, and how the Sentinels ultimately rolled through most of its schedule with an average of nearly eight runs per game outside tournaments.

"It was never a question," said Bergman of coming back to pitch, who now dons a light, plastic face mask.

The Sentinels won four consecutive 3A championships from 2002 through 2005 but moved up to 4A-II shortly thereafter and hadn't reached the championship game since.

Prohibitive favorites and the No. 1 seed coming into the tournament, the Sentinels lived up to their own lofty expectations, and even though coach Jerry Mullin was back East watching his daughter play college softball for the final time, the Sentinels pounded out hits (including two home runs Friday) and flashed leather behind Bergman.

Assistant Gary Davis called it, "kind of like being on auto-pilot.

"They were already a pretty motivated bunch," he said.

They looked in trouble early, as Greenway put five runners on base through the first three innings, but shortstop Courtney Rodriguez made two nifty plays to end two threats and Melissa Niedfelt stared into the sun but caught a line drive to end the third.

"They've been amazing," Bergman said of her defense. "They've had my back every inning the whole year."

So, too, have the bats. Seton scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings (which included Bergman's only home run of the season), then busted it open with four runs in the fifth inning.

Megan Johnson launched a home run, Courtney Rodriguez tripled and Kelsey Rodriguez pulled off a perfect squeeze play.

Seton added two more runs in the sixth thanks to walks, and shortly thereafter, Bergman and Landry Davis (the third of Gary Davis' daughters to win a state title at Seton Catholic) left the field, each of them holding their new hardware.
