Desert Vista boys, Chandler girls win 5A-I titles
By Kyle Odegard, Tribune
Ryan Milus fell seven-hundredths of a second short of breaking the Arizona 100-meter dash record he tied on Wednesday, but a pair of state titles isn’t such a bad consolation prize.
SLIDESHOW: 5A-I track and field state championships
The Chandler Hamilton sprinter won that event and the 200 in the 5A-I state track championships at Chandler on Saturday.
Milus finished the 100 in 10.39 seconds after running a 10.33 in preliminaries to tie LaNorris 'Cricket’ Marshall’s state mark, set in 1978. He will have one final shot at breaking the record when he competes in the Great Southwest Track and Field Classic in New Mexico from June 4-6.
“I knew it was going to be hard to beat,” Milus said. “I gave it my best and tried to get it, but I’m OK with being tied.”
The record book didn’t stay unblemished.
Laveen Cesar Chavez won the 400 relay in 40.90 seconds, topping the record of 41.33 seconds set in 1975 by Phoenix South Mountain.
Phoenix Desert Vista’s Spencer Chase set the state record in the 400 with a time of 46.47 seconds, eclipsing the 46.64 seconds run by Phoenix Maryvale’s Dwight Jones in 1977.
“I didn’t feel that good going into the blocks, but as soon as I busted out I felt like I was gliding,” Chase said.
The Thunder won the 5A-I boys title with a final score of 159. Chandler finished second with 80 points, and Mountain View came in third with 59.5.
The Chandler girls team absorbed an injury to Larrissa Matthews to easily win its fourth straight state title with 176 points. Phoenix Xavier (100 points) came in second and Desert Vista (82) finished third.
McKenzie Flannigan won the 200 and 400 to lead the Wolves. Freshman Jasmine Todd pitched in with a victory in the 100.
Matthews twisted her ankle prior to the race’s start when she stepped in a hole on the field. She won the 100 hurdles, but she finished second in the 100 and second in the 300 hurdles.
She won both hurdles events and the 100 dash last year.
“It just had to happen at the state meet,” Matthews said.
Bryce Lamb won the long jump and triple jump titles for the Chandler boys and finished second in the 100 and third in the 200.
It took three jumps, but Gilbert’s Sierra Meyer cleared 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump to claim her second straight title in the event.
“I knew I clipped it a little bit, and out of my peripheral (vision) I saw (the bar) bouncing,” Meyer said. “I was like, 'No, this is the last jump of my senior year.’ But I got off the mat and it was still up and I heard everyone cheering.”
Highland’s Jon Brown won the 1,600 race. It was the senior’s first year running track after normally playing volleyball during the spring. He finished second in the 800.

Tucson Ironwood Ridge won both the boys and girls titles.
The girls scored 108 points while Glendale Deer Valley was second with 77.
Ironwood Ridge’s boys scored 71 to outdistance Anthem Boulder Creek (55).
Mesa Desert Ridge’s Chris Jamison finished in second in the 100 and third in the 200. Desert Ridge’s boys finished 10th with 24 points.
Desert Ridge’s girls were eighth with 24 points.
Mesa Skyline’s Alexis Stamps finished third in the 200.
Skyline’s girls placed 16th with 15 points.
