Mountain Pointe holds on to edge Mesquite
By Kyle Odegard, Tribune
Mountain Pointe’s season was on the line, and all closer Josh Alexander could do was smile.
Mesquite scored three runs in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second, but the senior right-hander struck out Rocky High with a fastball on the outside corner as the Pride held on for the 7-6 victory in the 5A-I baseball state semifinals on Thursday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
“I love it,” Alexander said of being the closer. “It pumps me up so much. Just to know that the game is on your shoulders, it’s fun. It’s what you live for.”
Mountain Pointe entered the frame with a four-run cushion, but the first three runners reached against starter Joey Rocha, so Alexander was called on to extinguish the flames.
The Mesquite faithful were in a frenzy, as the Wildcats seemed destined for another one of their patented late-game heroics. And while Alexander allowed a pair of hits, he stranded the two most important runners on the basepaths to lead Mountain Pointe to the title game.
The Pride will take on No. 1 seed Desert Ridge on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Camelback Ranch in Glendale.
High struck out looking, and argued that the ball was outside. Alexander agreed.
“My man Kevin (Cron), he had a nice frame on that ball,” Alexander said. “That ball was a good six inches outside.”
It was the second game of the day between the teams, after Zach Davies threw a three-hit shutout for the 4-0 victory in the opener, handing Mountain Pointe its first loss in the double-elimination tournament.
It was a rare sight to see the Pride’s powerful offense shut down, and it wasted no time bouncing back in the second game.
Mesquite took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first of the second game, but the Pride answered with three of their own in the bottom of the frame.
The score was tied 3-3 until Mountain Pointe scored four runs in the fourth inning, the big blast a one-out triple by Jordan Kipper.
“If you’re going to win these games, you have to make big plays,” Mountain Pointe coach Brandon Buck said.
Mesquite cut the deficit to one run with only one out in the seventh, but Alexander shut the door.
Cron went 2-for-6 in the two games with a double and an intentional walk despite a leg injury that made it hard for him to move around. He threw a complete game in the opener, was behind the plate for the second game and was immediately lifted for a pinch-runner on the basepaths.
Cron has 21 home runs this season, one shy of tying the state record set by Desert Vista’s Corey Myers in 1999. He almost got there in the third inning of the second game, when a blast to straightaway center field hit high on the wall but stayed in the park for a double.

Mr. Umpire
Wow, even the pitcher is saying a pitch to end the game is 6 inches outside. Who determines the umpires in the state tournament? The guy behind the plate in this game was ridiculous. No consistency. Sad that a huge game comes down to this. Suggest removal of this commentMay 14, 2010

Great pitching prformance for the lefty Rocha from Mountain Pointe as he goes back to back wins against Hamilton and now Mesquite. He is a Big Gamer and its been a pleasere to see him throw. It really is too bad to see Arnold and Odegard, sports writers not give him his respect in your article as he lead his team and it was a Team effort so do not black ball the kid as you did the same in your last article but what the heck..it probably just fueled him even more to pitch like he did. Rocky High is a nice player, and that Mesquite team is loaded. I think Mesquite was just simply out coached and ran out of arms. Oh well! Suggest removal of this commentMay 14, 2010

Great game by the mountain pointe pitcher. i agree with the outcoaching. not sure why mesquite would start a reliever for the 2nd game who hadn't started all year when they had their #2 starter on rest ready. when he came in relief, he shut mp down for the last 3 innings. Out thinking yourself at tournament time. Suggest removal of this commentMay 14, 2010

The starter had started three games in the past month and threw great and proved he was a quality pitcher. Maybe they should have started the #2 but you never know what would have been... Suggest removal of this commentMay 14, 2010

The author of this article didn't want to do a fact check with his writing. I don't remember Desert Ridge playing at all during this game. Evidently the writer Kyle Odegard thought that Desert Ridge also played in this game. Here is the quote, 'The score was tied 3-3 until Desert Ridge scored four runs in the fourth inning, the big blast a one-out triple by Jordan Kipper.' Mr. Odegard, it was Mountain Pointe and not Desert Ridge who scored 4 runs. Perhaps a retractment of your error would be most appropriate.A Pitcher who comes in for relief and closes the game can say anything he wants whether he agrees with the umpire or not. Just a reminder to young Mr. High, when you are at bat with men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs and the go ahead runs in scoring position, you don't let that bat touch your shoulder at anytime. That bat is a weapon to inflict harm on the defense of the opponent. It's like missing a free throw in basketball. Take your cuts and make contact. A walk was not going to help the overall cause. A well placed hit or just a ground ball can cause trouble.
Thanks for the great game and a cold welcome to some bad reporting. Suggest removal of this comment

when the ball was not only 6 inches outside but almost touching the dirt and you wouldn't touch the ball anyways, why would you swing and miss rather than going 1-2 for another chance. yeah he didn't swing before but the called third strike was ridiculous Suggest removal of this commentMay 14, 2010

I see at least 6 d-1 players on the Mesquite team, some of them impact players. How on earth do you lose, all you have to do is fill out the line-up card and he managed to **** that up. Maybe Kelly Leake should run this team and take them to the Astrodome. Suggest removal of this commentMay 14, 2010

For those not man enough
Figures that people who aren't man enough. Maybe not even good enough will hide behind screen names and wont grow a pair and state their name. For those who think hollands a bad coach then maybe he cut you since you weren't good enough? Sorry you have to hold a grudge. Ask any player who has played for holland and I think you'd get a songle response of a great coach who not only prepared them for life but also knew the game very well. Wow! What a game! First, my hats off to the Pride's lefty Joey Rocha. That kid is a gamer...He beat the #1 and #2 teams in the state in Hamilton & Mesquite and I heard he threw a no hitter this year..He also threw a gem on Cox 7 earlier in the year..To shutdown those 2 high powered offenses w/ several signed D-1 players is impressive. Where is he going to school next year? I googled his name and what a gem he would be for the devils or wildcats..I guess his dad used to play at ASU in 1988 too.. As for the Mesquite kids, you guys didn't give up either. It was a great game. Good luck to the Pride & to all the players in the future...AZ has some talented high school players! Mesquite did not run out of arms Jeff Holland had great arms on the bench that he refused to use all through the season. this loss is on him. Suggest removal of this commentMay 17, 2010

Great going coach, you did a great job all season. Sometimes the law of averages catches up and there is nothing you can do about it. Ignore the stupid comments me and my son thinks you are a very good coach.Great season and looking forward to another great season next year. Suggest removal of this comment
