Friday roundup: Corona earns share of Central girls soccer title

Corona del Sol defeated host Marcos de Niza 3-0 in a girls soccer match Thursday to earn a share of the 5A Central Region crown.

Brittany Cole, Alexa Daiutolo and Este Rea each had a goal in the win. Hailey Hayes stopped five shots to earn her eighth shutout of the season.

The win gave the Aztecs (23-1, 6-2) the same region record as Mountain Pointe to earn a tie for first place in the region.

Corona or Mountain Pointe is likely to end up with the overall No. 1 seed in the 5A Division I state tournament, but the seeding will not be finalized until Saturday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hamilton shut out host Chandler 2-0 in a 5A Fiesta Region match.

Christie Stemple earned her eighth shutout on the season for the Huskies (8-11-1, 4-6). Madison Wellcome and Melanie Penningroth had the two goals for Hamilton.

Pinnacle beat host Chaparral 2-1 for the 4A Desert Sky Region title. Pinnacle will enter the 4A Division I state tournament as the Desert Sky’s top seed.

Chaparral earned the region’s No. 2 seed.

BOYS SOCCER

Basha defeated host Desert Vista 2-1 in a 5A Central Region contest. Kete Meskill and Thomas Rozinski each had a goal for the Bears (9-6, 5-3). Scott Grody added an assist.

Adam Farrer had the lone goal for the Thunder (12-10).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Corona del Sol fell short to Yuma Kofa, 58-56 in a 5A nonregion road game. Natalie Sargent led the Aztecs (6-16) with 14 points. Sargent also had nine rebounds.
