State girls soccer teams and players to watch
From Staff Reports
5A-I Favorite: Corona del Sol — According to the latest power point rankings, it’s a crapshoot between the Aztecs and Mountain Pointe, but Corona may not face stiff competition until the state semifinals if Xavier or Gilbert is alive.
Darkhorse: Gilbert — The Tigers (16-5) went undefeated in the Fiesta Region, and though they have lost to the Central powers, the games were close.
Players to watch:
Alexandra Elston, Mountain Pointe — The heart and soul of the Pride, Elston has 20 goals and a 5A-leading 25 assists despite a myriad of injuries this season. Forms the most dangerous duo alongside teammate Erica Long.
Chelsea Canepa, Xavier — The junior captain and All-Desert Valley Region forward led the Gators with 15 goals, including the game-winner against then-No. 2 Desert Vista. Beware the Gators, who quietly hung with the Central Region powers most of the season.
Brittany Cole, Corona del Sol — Became the school’s all-time points leader last week after another 25-goal, 10-assist season. She’s only a junior.
Bostyn Burger, Gilbert — The senior is Gilbert’s top defender, which means something on a team which has allowed only 13 goals in 24 games. Seventeen of the team’s 19 wins were shutouts.
5A-II
Favorite: Tucson Flowing Wells — It went 16-5 this season while playing one of the tougher schedules in Division II. The Caballeros recently had a 12-match winning streak snapped by Tucson Salpointe Catholic in the region playoffs.
Darkhorse: Marcos de Niza — Much like the school’s boys team, nobody played a tougher schedule (read: Central Region) than Marcos. The Padres have victories against Desert Vista and Basha, and several close losses to the 5A-I schools.
4A-I
Favorite: Tucson Catalina Foothills — The Falcons are undefeated (22-0) this year, including nine wins over 5A teams. Anything less than a state title would be a surprise.
Darkhorse: Chaparral — The Firebirds have lost three of four heading into the tournament, but get a favorable draw. A secondround game against Tucson Sabino is winnable, which would set up a quarterfinal matchup with Foothills.
Player to watch: Brittany Willock, Pinnacle — The senior midfielder led the team with 21 goals and had nine assists during the season. The Pioneers (14-2-1) are the second seed in the 4A-I state tournament.
4A-II
Favorite: Flagstaff — A regularseason hiccup against Flagstaff Coconino was avenged in the region tournament, and Flagstaff is the slight favorite in a pretty wide-open field.
Darkhorse: Notre Dame — Split games with Wells Fargo II Region rival Cactus Shadows during the season, but will likely have to knock off two-seed Arcadia in the quarterfinals to get another chance at the third-seeded Falcons.
Players to watch: Danica Webb, Higley — Scored 50 goals this season for the fourth-seeded Knights, including a season-best five against Coronado on Jan. 16.
Danielle Madison, Arcadia — The senior do-everything player for the Titans. Her play will determine how far Arcadia goes.
