Girls Soccer roundup: Higley needs OT to beat Desert Edge

Defending 4A Division II champion Gilbert Higley beat Goodyear Desert Edge 4-1 in overtime in the state quarterfinals Saturday at the Tempe Sports Complex.
Vanessa Bonidilla scored the first goal of the game on a free kick to give the Scorpions the lead. Bailee Wilson then tied the game early in the second half, and Danica Webb and Carissa LaFevers put the game away for the Knights in overtime. LaFevers scored two goals, and Webb had one.
It was only the second loss of the season for the Scorpions (16-2), both coming against Higley. The Knights (20-4) used team defense by Kristin Yosik, Blakele Bergman, Millie Riter, and Wilson to hold off the Scorpions.
5A-I quarterfinals
CORONA DEL SOL DEF. DOBSON, 2-1: Brittany Cole scored two goals off two Este Rea assists to lift Corona del Sol (22-3-1) over Dobson at Tempe Sports Complex and into the 5A State semifinals.
Katie Messer scored Dobson’s lone goal, connecting on a long throw-in by Shawn-tay Greene.
MOUNTAIN POINTE DEF. HIGHLAND, 4-1: Erica Long notched her 30th goal of the season to open the scoring in Mountain Pointe’s win over Highland at Tempe Sports Complex. The Pride (22-3) also got goals from Wendy Murphy, Colleen Musgrove and Alexandra Elston in the victory. Natalie Walten scored for Highland (14-7-1).
5A-II quarterfinals
AVONDALE WESTVIEW DEF. PARADISE VALLEY, 3-1: Kirsten Birkholt scored for the Trojans, who finished 13-7 on the season. … OTHER GAMES: Tucson Flowing Wells defeated Marana Mountain View 6-0.
4A-I quarterfinals
CHAPARRAL DEF. TUCSON SABINO, 1-0: Ally Thrall scored the lone goal for Chaparral (13-5) on an assist from Jordan Owen as the Firebirds won at the Tempe Sports Complex to advance to the semifinals. Jessica Bowen earned the shutout for the Firebirds, stopping six shots on the night.
PINNACLE DEF. TUCSON CANYON DEL ORO, 5-1: Jessica Summers scored two goals as Pinnacle advanced at Tempe Sports Complex. Anna Clark, Brittany Willock, and Kelsey Banfield added a goal each for the Pioneers (15-2-1). Canyon del Oro scored its lone goal on a penalty kick. …
OTHER GAMES: Tucson Catalina Foothills defeated Goodyear Millennium 3-0, and Tucson Cienega defeated Tucson Rincon 3-2 in overtime, winning 4-3 in the shootout.
4A-II quarterfinals
CACTUS SHADOWS DEF. FLAGSTAFF COCONINO, 1-0: Cactus Shadows won 5-4 on penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation and overtime at Tempe Sports Complex. Alana Hutz, Kacie Annolino, McKenzie Wadas, Cassie Smith, and Erin Regan scored the penalty kicks for the Falcons (14-6). Goalkeeper Megan Baldacci had seven saves in the game including one on the Panthers’ (16-4) fifth and final penalty kick to seal the win.
TUCSON PALO VERDE DEF. ARCADIA, 2-1: The No. 10 seed upset No. 2 seed Arcadia, defeating the Titans 5-4 in penalty kicks at the Tempe Sports Complex.
OTHER GAMES: Flagstaff defeated Bullhead City Mohave 2-0.
1A/2A/3A semifinals
SETON CATHOLIC DEF. TUCSON PUSCH RIDGE, 13-0: Jessica Lopez accounted for four goals and five assists, and Katie Blomberg scored three goals at Tempe Sports Complex as the Sentinels (19-3) rolled into the 3A championship. Shannon Desmond added two goals for Seton.
TEMPE PREP DEF. FOUNTAIN HILLS, 5-2: Tempe Prep edged Fountain Hills at Tempe Sports Complex to move on to the championship game.
