Canyon St., Tempe Prep win track and field titles
By Melissa Wintemute, For the Tribune
Queen Creek Canyon State dominated the 1A boys state track meet with a title-winning 219 points.
Not to be outdone, Tempe Prep compiled 165 points to capture its third straight 1A girls title at Mesa High Saturday.
“The championship was our goal from the start,” said Tempe Prep’s first-year coach Chris Yujuico. “These are some of the greatest kids I have ever known. They exceeded my expectations.”
Briana Prince paced Tempe Prep with a 13.51-second first-place finish in the 100 meters, second-place place finishes in the 200 at 28.11 and 1:03.07 in the 400, and a third-place jump of 14 feet, 11 inches in the long jump.
Tempe Prep captain Rachel Knebelsberger called Yujuico’s coaching, “reliable and approachable. He knew how to push and keep us disciplined.”
The Tempe Prep boys finished fifth with 44 1/2 points.
Canyon State held a 10-point lead in the team scoring going into Saturday.
“Once we realized that we had three or four kids in the final heats, we knew we could pull away,” Canyon State coach James Golden said.
Canyon State was a whopping 129 points ahead of second-place Northland Prep’s 90 points.
Jai Brewster was a multiple winner for the Rams, taking the 100 in 11.45, and edging teammate George Jones in the 200 with a time of 23.51. He also anchored Canyon State to a 44.58-second win in the 400 relay.

“I have never run track before, and now I plan to run track in college,” said Fleming.
