Maricopa’s defense stopped Goodyear Estrella Foothills just inches from the goal line as time expired, preserving a 20-13 victory over the Wolves Friday night in Maricopa.

The Rams (1-0) were making their 3A debut, but made the Wolves (0-1) look like they were the new kids on the block.

Maricopa’s defense completely shut down Estrella in the first half, holding it to 69 yards of total offense. The Rams’ Blake Schwanbeck also picked off two passes that eventually resulted in touchdowns.

He returned his second pick 55 yards to the Wolves’ 10-yard line.

Maricopa’s Matt Fierros missed a good portion of the first half dealing with injuries but still managed to rack up 100 yards rushing on 13 carries at the intermission.

The beginning of the second half was the complete opposite of the first. Estrella came out and scored two quick touchdowns and smacked the Rams around on the defensive side of the ball.

Maricopa’s offense was nearly nonexistent until early in the fourth quarter when the Rams went back to their bread and butter, a steady diet of Fierros. But after 13 straight carries, Fierros fumbled deep in Wolves territory.

The game appeared to be over when the Wolves completed a pass at the Ram 2-yard line and the buzzer sounded. But the referees awarded a first down, saying the clock should have stopped with two seconds remaining. Estrella then tried a quarterback sneak that failed.
