Maricopa’s Fierros burns Bourgade
By Brett Fera, From Staff Reports
Just two weeks after carrying the ball a school-record 31 times in a season-opening
win, Maricopa senior running back Matt Fierros’ workload was greatly reduced Friday night. Sort of.
On just 14 carries, Fierros ran for 279 yards and five touchdowns to lead the host Rams to a wild 45-40 win over visiting Phoenix Bourgade Catholic (1-2) in a nonregion game.
Fierros scored on runs of 23 and 2 yards in the first half, adding touchdowns of 65, 30
and 90 yards in the fourth quarter — the last capping Maricopa’s scoring and all but sealing the victory.
Fierros also had the Rams’ lone completion, a 25-yard dump-off from quarterback Will Clemans to give Fierros more than 300 total yards for the game.
Maricopa (2-1) ran for 399 yards on 32 attempts.
