Prep Highlights: Uribe, Notre Dame top Arcadia in girls volleyball

Scottsdale Notre Dame beat visiting Phoenix Arcadia Tuesday in a 4A non-region girls volleyball match, 25-22, 25-11, 21-25, 25-15.

After Arcadia dropped the first two games, Melissa Toth helped them storm back with a 25-21 win in the third game. The Saints regained control in Game 4, jumping out to a 6-0 lead and never losing control.

Notre Dame held Arcadia at bay with the help of its defense and outside hitters. Rebecca Slegers had nine digs.

Cassie Uribe led the Saints (5-0) with 17 kills and also added six digs. Sarah Svorinic had 46 assists.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Pinnacle beat Peoria Sunrise Mountain 25-18, 16-25, 25-11, 13-25, 15-13.

Down 6-1 in the fifth game, Pinnacle rallied behind Kaylee Mundell. Mundell led the Pioneers with 11 kills.

Kenzie Smith had 13 aces and Christine Sarager added nine kills to lead Mesquite (10-4) over Mesa (9-12) at home, 25-22, 20-25, 26-24, 25-17. Annie Clifford had 15 kills for the Jackrabbits.

Tricia Burnham had 14 kills and Jamie Lunt had 32 assists to help Highland defeat St. Mary’s 25-16, 25-18, 24-26, 25-23 at home. Sadi Rogers added 19 digs for the Hawks.

Kaitlin Halverstadt had 10 kills and eight blocks to lead host Horizon (7-6) over Dobson 25-10, 25-14, 25-0. Meghan Bristyan served 25 times in a row in the final game for the Huskies.

Alaina Berkman had 21 kills to lead host Valley Christian over Scottsdale Christian in a 2A Central Region match, 25-23, 24-25, 25-17, 25-14.

Chanel Brown had 17 kills for the Trojans (6-0) and Tori Gentry added 36 assists.

Mountain Pointe defeated visiting Red Mountain in a 5A nonregion match, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14, 25-14. Samantha Hodgkins had 21 kills and Ashley Castle added 16 kills and seven aces for Mountain Pointe.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Molly Snittjer finished first in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly to lead Notre Dame over Saguaro 107-78 at Chaparral Pool in Scottsdale. Caitlyn Carney won two events for the Sabercats.

Desert Mountain won its 5A nonregion meet 150-23 over visiting Surprise Valley Vista. The Wolves won every event, including double wins from three different swimmers.

Emily Barton won the 50 freestyle (25.62) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.18), Angela Duckworth won the 100 butterfly (1:00.20) and the 500 freestyle (5:01.53) and Ally Loper won the 100 freestyle (57.00) and 100 backstroke (1:04.82).

BOYS SWIMMING

Brothers Ben and Alex Brouwer combined to win three events, but it wasn’t enough as Notre Dame fell to Saguaro 97-84 at Chaparral Pool in Scottsdale. …

Desert Mountain won every event in its 5A nonregion meet against visiting Valley Vista for a 143-21 victory.

Three double winners led the Wolves; Sam Weinstein won the 200 freestyle (1:52.81) and the 100 butterfly (52.68), Devon Judge won the 50 freestyle (21.87) and the 100 freestyle (50.19), and Matthew Christie won the 200 individual medley (2:15.69) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.40).

BOYS GOLF

McClintock built a four-stroke team lead after the first round of the East Valley Invitational at Seville Golf & Country Club in Gilbert. Seton Catholic, Basha, Corona del Sol and Gilbert rounded out the top five teams.

Corona del Sol’s David Longston holds the individual lead after shooting a 2-under-par 34. Skyline’s Joe Hardy is one stroke back.

The tournament will move to Oakwood Golf Club Gold Course in Sun Lakes today and the final round will be played on Thursday at Trilogy Golf Club in Gilbert.

Cactus Shadows (183) edged Chaparral (185) by two strokes in its three-team match at Las Colinas Golf Course in Queen Creek. Higley was third (188).

Higley’s Jordan Scherfenberg shot a 35 to win the individual competition.

GIRLS GOLF

Gilbert’s Cheyenne Hickle and Highland’s Shelby Phillips both shot 32 to pace the field in the Gilbert City Tournament at Augusta Ranch.

In the team competition, Desert Ridge (149) leads over Highland (156), Mesquite (168) and Gilbert (205).
