Matt Fierros carried the ball 34 times for 260 yards and two touchdowns, but it was the Maricopa senior running back’s lone reception that proved the difference in a 3A South Region victory over Tucson Empire.

With less than three minutes to play, Fierros hauled in a catch on 3rd-and-8 at the 15-yard line — likely just enough for a first down.

But after being sandwiched by a pair of Empire defenders, Fierros came out of the scrum unscathed and darted down the sidelines for the go-ahead score.

Maricopa (3-2, 1-1) trailed Empire (1-4, 0-2), 14-7 at halftime, with fullback Blake Schwanbeck scoring the Rams first touchdown from 29 yards out in the second quarter.
